Steps & Staircases

Hardscape Steps That Connect Your Property Safely and Beautifully.

Custom steps and staircases using paver systems, natural stone, or concrete. Built to code with consistent dimensions.

Steps That Work as Hard as They Look

Steps and staircases are where hardscaping meets safety engineering. Every set of steps must have consistent riser heights, adequate tread depths, proper drainage, and nonslip surfaces. In the Fraser Valley, where rain and frost create slippery conditions for months at a time, steps also need to be designed for traction and rapid drainage to prevent ice accumulation.

At Trueform, we build steps and staircases using paver block systems, natural stone, poured concrete, or combinations of these materials. Each material has specific advantages: paver steps integrate seamlessly with paver patios and walkways, natural stone steps create an organic transition between landscape zones, and concrete steps offer clean modern lines with maximum structural strength.

Every staircase we build starts with a precise measurement of the total rise (the height difference between the top and bottom landings) and the available run (the horizontal distance). From these measurements, we calculate the number of steps, the riser height, and the tread depth to meet building code requirements. The BC Building Code requires consistent riser heights throughout a staircase, typically between 5 and 7.5 inches, and tread depths of at least 11 inches.

The structural foundation of outdoor steps is just as important as the visible surface. Every staircase requires a compacted gravel base at the foot, proper drainage at each tread to prevent water pooling, and adequate frost protection to prevent heaving. For longer staircases on slopes, we integrate the steps with retaining walls to stabilize the adjacent grade.

Lighting is a critical safety consideration for outdoor steps. We design step lighting into every staircase project, either as integrated LED riser lights, bollard lights at landings, or overhead lighting from adjacent structures. Properly lit steps are not just safer; they transform a functional element into a dramatic landscape feature after dark.

How We Work

01

Grade Survey

Precise measurement of total rise, available run, and site conditions to determine step count and dimensions.

02

Foundation Prep

Excavation, compacted gravel base, and drainage provisions at each landing and transition point.

03

Step Construction

Each step built with consistent riser height and tread depth. Integrated drainage and edge details.

04

Lighting & Finishing

Step lighting installed, nonslip treatments applied if needed, and final grade adjustments at transitions.

Paver Block Steps

Preengineered step units from Belgard, Unilock, and Allan Block that match your patio and walkway pavers.

Natural Stone Treads

Full depth natural stone treads in granite, bluestone, or sandstone. Honed or thermal finish for traction.

Poured Concrete

Cast in place concrete steps with formed edges, broom finish for traction, and optional decorative treatments.

LED Step Lights

Low voltage LED lights integrated into step risers for safety and aesthetics. Waterproof and rated for outdoor use.

What to Expect

Step and staircase costs depend heavily on the number of steps, material selection, and integration with retaining walls or other structures. Individual paver block steps typically cost $150 to $350 per step. Full natural stone staircases range from $3,000 to $15,000. Concrete staircases with formed walls range from $2,500 to $10,000. We include step lighting costs in our estimates when applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The BC Building Code specifies riser heights between 5 and 7.5 inches (125mm to 200mm) with a maximum variation of 3/8 inch between any two risers in the same staircase. We design every staircase to code with consistent dimensions.

In BC, outdoor staircases with more than 3 risers or a total rise exceeding 24 inches typically require a handrail on at least one side. The specific requirements depend on your municipality and the application.

Yes. We frequently build steps to match existing paver patios, using the same paver products and patterns. If your existing pavers have been discontinued, we source the closest match or design a complementary transition.

We use textured paver surfaces, thermal finished natural stone, and broom finished concrete to provide traction in wet conditions. Proper drainage at each tread prevents water pooling. Step lighting improves visibility in low light conditions.

A typical set of 4 to 8 outdoor steps takes 2 to 3 days. Longer staircases integrated with retaining walls may take 1 to 2 weeks. We provide a specific timeline during your consultation.
