Excavation & Grading

Precision Excavation & Grading.

Professional excavation and grading for patios, driveways, retaining walls, building pads, and full yard regrading across the Fraser Valley.

Every Great Project Starts Below Grade

Excavation and grading is the invisible foundation of every outdoor construction project. A paver patio, retaining wall, driveway, or building pad is only as good as the ground it sits on. Improper excavation leads to settling. Poor grading causes drainage problems. Inadequate compaction results in structural failure. At Trueform, we treat excavation and grading as precision work, not just digging and moving dirt.

Our excavation services cover everything from small scale hand excavation for garden features to full scale machine excavation for driveways, building pads, and site clearing. We operate compact excavators and skid steers that can access tight residential sites while delivering the power needed for heavy clay soils and rock. All excavated material is either reused onsite for grading or hauled away and disposed of properly.

Grading is the art and science of shaping the ground surface to achieve specific elevations and slopes. Every hardscape project requires precise grading: patios need a minimum 2 percent slope away from foundations, driveways need grade transitions that vehicles can navigate comfortably, retaining walls need level base pads at exact elevation, and lawns need positive drainage that prevents ponding.

For full yard regrading projects, we establish a comprehensive grading plan that addresses the entire property as a system. We identify where water enters the property, how it flows across the surface, and where it exits. We then regrade the entire area to create positive drainage in all zones, eliminate low spots, and direct water to appropriate discharge points. This systemic approach prevents the common problem of fixing drainage in one area only to create a new problem in another.

Compaction is the final critical step. Fraser Valley's clay soils are prone to settling when disturbed, and inadequate compaction is the leading cause of hardscape failure in our region. We compact all excavated and filled areas in lifts using vibratory plate compactors or rollers, testing density to ensure we achieve the 95 percent standard Proctor specification required for hardscape construction.

How We Work

01

Survey & Planning

Establish existing grades, design target elevations, and plan excavation depths, fill requirements, and drainage flow.

02

Excavation

Machine or hand excavation to engineered depth. Material stockpiled for reuse or hauled offsite.

03

Grading & Fill

Subgrade shaped to target elevation with proper slopes. Fill material placed and spread in controlled lifts.

04

Compaction & Verification

Each lift mechanically compacted to specification. Final grades checked against design elevations.

Compact Excavators

Rubber tracked mini excavators that access tight residential sites while minimizing lawn and landscape damage.

Compacted Gravel Fill

Crushed gravel in 3/4 minus gradation for subbase and fill applications. Compacts to stable, load bearing density.

Geotextile Fabric

Woven and nonwoven fabrics that separate soil layers, prevent migration, and reinforce weak subgrades.

Plate Compactors

Vibratory plate compactors for granular base compaction. Forward and reversible models for different soil types.

What to Expect

Excavation costs depend on volume, material type, site access, and disposal requirements. Small scale excavation (patio prep, planting beds) costs $50 to $100 per cubic yard. Large scale excavation with machine work and hauling runs $30 to $60 per cubic yard. Full yard regrading for a typical residential lot costs $3,000 to $10,000 depending on the extent of work. Compaction is included in all our excavation services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We arrange BC One Call utility locates before any excavation work. All underground utilities (gas, electrical, water, telecom) are marked and we maintain safe clearances during excavation. This is a legal requirement and a safety priority.

Yes. Our compact excavators fit through standard gates and operate in confined backyard spaces. For areas too tight for machines, we perform hand excavation. We protect existing landscape features and structures during all excavation work.

Clean fill soil is reused onsite for grading where possible. Excess material, contaminated soil, and rock are hauled to approved disposal facilities. We include disposal costs in our estimates so there are no surprises.

Properly compacted grading is permanent. Settlement in the first year is normal for disturbed soils, which is why we compact to specification. We recommend waiting one full season before installing permanent features on newly graded areas in some cases.

Small scale work costs $50 to $100 per cubic yard. Machine excavation with hauling runs $30 to $60 per cubic yard. Full yard regrading costs $3,000 to $10,000 for typical residential lots.
