Covered Structures

Covered Outdoor Spaces That Defy the Weather.

Custom pergolas, gazebos, shade structures, and covered outdoor rooms in cedar, aluminum, vinyl, and composite materials.

Outdoor Living in Any Weather

In the Fraser Valley, rain is the single biggest barrier to outdoor living. A beautiful patio, outdoor kitchen, or seating area sits unused for months when there is no overhead protection. A well designed covered structure changes the equation entirely, turning your outdoor space into a room you can use twelve months of the year regardless of what the forecast says.

At Trueform, we design and build covered structures that range from open pergolas providing filtered light and partial rain protection to fully roofed outdoor rooms with integrated lighting, fans, heaters, and sound systems. The design depends on your goals: a pergola over a dining area creates an intimate atmosphere with dappled shade, while a solid roof extension over an outdoor kitchen provides complete weather protection for year round cooking.

Western red cedar is our most popular material for pergola and gazebo construction. It is naturally resistant to rot, insects, and weather, and it provides a warm, natural aesthetic that complements any architectural style. We also build with aluminum for a modern, low maintenance option, vinyl for a traditional look with zero upkeep, and composite lumber for wood like appearance with enhanced durability.

Structural engineering is critical for any covered structure. Posts must be anchored to proper footings below frost line, beams must be sized for snow load and wind resistance, and connections must use structural hardware rated for the loads involved. In the Fraser Valley, where wet snow events and wind storms can produce significant loads, proper engineering is not optional. Every structure we build meets or exceeds BC Building Code requirements.

We integrate covered structures with your existing landscape and hardscaping for a seamless look. Electrical is planned for lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, and speakers. Posts can be wrapped in stone to match your patio or fireplace. Gutters and downspouts are included for solid roof structures to manage the significant rainfall our region receives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Traditional open slat pergolas provide partial rain protection and filtered shade. For full rain protection in the Fraser Valley, we recommend adding a polycarbonate roof, retractable canopy, or building a solid roof structure. We offer all options.

In most Fraser Valley municipalities, covered structures over a certain size (typically 100 sq ft) or attached to the house require a building permit. Freestanding open pergolas may be exempt. We confirm requirements and handle all permit applications.

A properly built cedar pergola lasts 20 to 30 years or more. Regular staining every 2 to 3 years extends lifespan and maintains appearance. Left unstained, cedar weathers to a silver grey and remains structurally sound for decades.

Yes. We frequently add pergolas and covered structures to existing patios. Posts can be anchored to the existing surface or to new footings depending on the patio construction. We assess structural compatibility during the consultation.
