Why Standard Turf Is Not Enough for Dog Owners

Dogs use your yard differently than people. They dig, they run the same paths over and over, and they urinate in the same spots repeatedly. A turf product that works fine for a decorative front lawn will fail in a backyard with two active dogs. The turf needs to drain quickly, resist concentrated urine exposure, and be easy to clean thoroughly. In Abbotsford, where rain is constant from October through April, drainage becomes even more critical because moisture has nowhere to go if the base is not built correctly.

We install pet specific turf products with shorter pile heights, perforated backings that drain at over 30 inches per hour, and antimicrobial infill that actively breaks down bacteria. The combination of the right turf, the right infill, and a properly engineered base is what separates a successful pet installation from one that smells by summer.

Antimicrobial Infill: The Most Important Upgrade

For pet installations, we strongly recommend antimicrobial infill like Envirofill or BioFill over standard silica sand. These products are coated with an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and the organisms that cause odor. Standard silica sand does not do this. It simply sits between the fibres and does nothing to address the biological load that comes with pet waste.

The cost difference between standard infill and antimicrobial infill is roughly $1 to $2 per square foot, and for pet owners it is the single most worthwhile upgrade. We have seen plenty of pet turf installations done by other companies using cheap infill, and every one of them develops odor issues within the first year. Abbotsford's mild, wet climate accelerates bacterial growth, which makes antimicrobial infill even more important in our region.

Drainage Requirements for Pet Areas

Every pet turf installation needs a drainage rate that far exceeds what a standard residential lawn requires. We build our pet area bases with a minimum of four inches of compacted drain rock topped with crusher dust, pitched to drain away from structures. The turf backing itself must have perforations every few inches to allow urine and rinse water to pass through immediately rather than pooling on the surface.

In some Abbotsford yards, especially those with heavy clay soil, we also install a French drain or perimeter drain beneath the turf base to carry water away from the area entirely. Without this, the moisture has nowhere to go and the base becomes saturated, which leads to odor and slow drainage.

Cleaning Routine for Pet Turf

Pick up solid waste daily, just as you would with natural grass. Once or twice a week, hose down the turf with plain water to dilute and flush urine. Every month, apply an enzyme based turf cleaner that breaks down the proteins in urine and eliminates odor at the source. Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals because they kill the antimicrobial agents in your infill and can damage the turf fibres.

During Abbotsford's dry summer months, you may need to rinse more frequently because there is no rain to help flush the surface naturally. A quick five minute hose down keeps the turf fresh between deeper cleanings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not if it is installed correctly. Antimicrobial infill, a properly draining base, and a simple weekly rinse routine prevent odor. Installations that skip antimicrobial infill or have poor drainage are the ones that develop smell problems.

We recommend 30mm to 40mm for pet areas. Shorter pile is easier to clean, dries faster, and does not trap waste between the fibres the way longer pile does.

Quality polyethylene turf is non toxic and safe for pets. The turf itself does not contain harmful chemicals. We recommend keeping an eye on puppies who are heavy chewers, as ingesting large pieces of any material is a choking concern, not a toxicity one.
